Torrie Lewis wins 200 metre repechage, but falls short in semi final
Newcastle junior and Australia’s fastest women Torrie Lewis took to the track again overnight. The 19-year-old blitzed the field in the repechage round to see her through to her first Olympic semi final. Unfortunately, Lewis ran seventh, which wasn’t enough to see her through to the final. She’ll be back in action for the women’s 4×100 metre relay on Thursday.

Sharks downed by Japan; still through to quarterfinals
The Aussie men’s water polo team have hit a speed bump in their Olympic campaign, upset 14-13 by Japan in their final pool match-up last night. The Aussies started strong, leading 4-1 before Newcastle’s Nathan Power added another. But Japan started to claw its way back. It was a high scoring affair with the two teams level at 13 a-piece in the final period, with just 2 and a half minutes to play. Until a penalty against the Aussies in the final minute saw the Japanese capitalise, with a 14-13 win. Regardless of the loss, the Sharks are still through to the quarterfinals and will go head to head with the USA on Thursday morning.
Arnott bags another Olympic goal, but the Hockeyroos are eliminated
The Hockeyroos Olympic campaign has come to a heart breaking end in the quarterfinals overnight. Despite having an unbeaten run in the Pool stage, the women’s campaign was upended by China in a close 3-2 defeat. Willow Trees Alice Arnott was the first to get on the sheet, with her fourth goal in as many matches at her first Olympics. But China fired back and lead 2-1 at halftime, and extended their lead in the third. The Aussies managed to claw back some momentum in the final quarter, but it wasn’t enough. This wraps up a third Olympics for Newcastle’s Mariah Williams, and a first for Grafton’s Grace Young and Alice Arnott.
