The Catholic Church is confident Maitland Council will approve plans for the redevelopment of the historic St Johns Convent.
The diocese wants to restore the ageing chapel back to its former glory, and redevelop the Bishops House and adjoining convent.
“We’ve been working very closely with Maitland Council on this an other similar projects and trying to see that precint redeveloped as a cathedral precinct for Maitland. We think that would be a strong tourist attraction and also help revitalise the centre of Maitland,” said Sean Scalon from the Maitland-Newcastle Catholic Diocese.
The council will discuss the proposal tomorrow night.
