HORTICULTURIST FIGHTS TO SAVE 100-YEAR-OLD TREE

An Alstonville horticulturist is calling for a “stay of execution”, to save a 100-year old fig tree in the grounds of the local public school.

It comes after a study found the tree had a 1 in 200 chance of causing a “disastrous situation” and recommended it be cut down.

However Mr Prendergast says not enough testing has been done.

“No leaf analysis, no proportionate root testing done or measured to see if there was any encroachment on that.”
