MACADAMIA CROP TO DROP IN 2011

Australia’s macadamia crop could be slightly down this year due to the rain.

The Australian Macadamia Society estimates around 35,000 tonnes will reach our shelves this season.

That’s down from 37, 000 in 2009, and 35, 500 last year.

“we were expecting a much better crop for this year but late last year during the flowering process there was a bit of damage done during those heavy rains”

And it could be a tough season for retailers too, who are already having trouble getting supplies to meet their demands.

“It’s tough getting macadamia nuts and lets hope we don’t end up being the Macadamia Castle without Macadamias like the pub with no beer”

The Northern Rivers accounts for about 60 per cent of the total macadamia crop.
