BUS SEATBELT RALLY
Parents say it’s time for the government to get serious and introduce seatbelts on school buses.
They claim regional students are the most at risk because of the speed buses travel on some routes.

Yes, kids need to be safely strapped into their seat with a seat belt, just like they are when they travel by car. The Labor Government have been stalling on chilren’s safety for 15 years & we one day their luck will run out – killing innocent children because of their neglect. Would you like to travel on high speed highways & dirt back roads on a bus without seat belts – No, so why make kids do it? Some buses carry over 100 kids with 100 school bags – how dangerous is that in a rollover or crash! At the moment Andrew Stoner MP, who will soon be our deputy leader, plans to continue the stalling of the previous neglectful Government. We’ve appealed to him to start fitting buses on high risk rural school bus routes with seat belts and outlaw standing. He knows it’s dangerous & is fully aware that seat belts save lives, so why not begin safety reform NOW. Stop talking about it. Only Victoria & NSW ignore the plight of these poor children & I hope the elected government listen to our call for seat belt safety before the next Grafton or Kempsey type bus tragedy. If kids on buses were covered by WorkCover, the Government would be fined under OH&S laws.
Yes – kids need to be safely strapped into their bus seat with a seat belt, just like they need to be when they travel by car. The Labor Government have successfully stalled on children’s safety for 15 years and one day luck will run out. It can only be described as neglect to ignore the plight of children during 400+ bus trips each year on dangerous roads. It’s obviously unsafe to travel on high speed highways and dirt back roads on a bus with no seat belt. If kids on buses were covered by WorkCover, the Government would be fined under OH&S laws & responsible persons would be jailed for their negligence and lack of Duty of Care.
Some buses carry in excess of 100 kids, along with 100 school bags – how dangerous is that in a crash or rollover! At present, Andrew Stoner MP, Leader of the National Party [representing country people] plans to continue stalling, even though high risk bus routes were identified 3 yrs ago. We hope a sensible policy for all new & replacement buses to be fitted with seat belts and to outlaw standing in the aisle, on high speed roads, will be released before the election. Everyone knows seat belts save lives – we need to stop talking about it & begin seat belt safety reform NOW. NSW & Victoria are lagging behind – WA fitted seat belts on all rural bus routes in 5 yrs, so any obstacles put up by bus organisations were solved – why reinvent the wheel, when other states have been successful? Please act before another Kempsey or Grafton type bus tragedy is afflicted on innocent children. Please listen to safety organisations who advocate bus safety reform, along with parents who are afraid of losing a child/children.
