MULLUM’S HISTORIC HYDRO STATION SAVED

Restoration work has started on Mullumbimby’s heritage-listed hydroelectric power station.

Built in 1923 at Laverty’s Gap, it was the third of its kind installed on the Australian mainland.

Originally Country Energy was going to remove the old power station to make way for a network upgrade between Mullumbimby and Lismore, but revised its plans following community interest.

The $350,000 preservation project is expected to be completed early next year.
