Merewether looked certain to win at half-time comfortably leading 20-0, but the Wanderers pulled off a miraculous comeback with a late penalty in overtime at Sportsground no. 2 on Saturday taking out the match 23-20.
Wanderers’ Luke Simmons came off the bench in the second half, spent some time in the sin-bin for dissent, and then kicked Wanderers to victory. It was sweet revenge after a crushing defeat in round 7 when Merewether won 52-22.
It was the perfect way for Marcus Christensen to celebrate his 150th game.
This is Merewether’s 3rd loss in the last 4 games leaving Maitland in the top spot after defeating Hamilton 35-29.
