POLICE INJURED IN ROADSIDE ARREST
A sergeant has been injured and a senior constable assaulted during an arrest in the Hunter last night.
At 5pm, an officer patrolling the New England Highway at East Maitland, attempted to stop a motorcyclist who was allegedly speeding on an unregistered road bike.
When the motorcycle stopped in traffic, the officer approached the rider who is alleged to have lashed out and fallen off his bike, before punching the senior constable in the face and chest.
Police say the 39-year-old continued to kick and punch, as the officer struggled to contain him.
The accused was arrested with the help of members of the public.
Additional police were required to restrain the man, with one sergeant sustaining a dislocated shoulder.
The motorcyclist was taken to Maitland Police Station and charged with numerous counts of reckless driving and assault.
He was refused bail to appear at Maitland Local Court today.
