Construction in the heart of Cooks Hill’s eat street has finally come to an end, with the completion of a $6 million upgrade to Council Street.
What was once a severe flooding area during major storms will now be less at risk, with the implementation of a new underground drainage system.
The replaced drainage includes a 3-metre wide storm water drain, designed to take rainwater from the local area to Cottage Creek.
Lord Mayor, Nuatali Nelmes, says the council has been working with residents and businesses for years to resolve the flooding issue.
“It’s fantastic to see this major $6 million upgrade complete” she says.
8 thousand new plants, 18 new trees and locally designed artworks have also brightened up the once dim street.
Most importantly, additional parking will lessen the time it takes to find a park on Darby Street.
Owner of the popular Three Monkeys Cafe, Anthony Strachan, says he has already seen the benefits of the project.
“The renewal of this area is a great thing for local businesses. The better it looks, the more people who are going to come here.
“It’s unreal to see people already enjoying the new street furniture and interacting with the street art.”
