POLICE SEARCH FOR MISSING SURFER

UPDATE: As no missing persons have been reported in the area, the search has been suspended.

A search has continued this morning for a surfer believed to be missing off Newcastle.

Just before 6.30pm last night, emergency services were called to Newcastle Beach, after reports a surfer appeared to be struggling in the water.

A female witness told police she saw what she believed was a surfer in choppy surf conditions about 100 metres offshore.

Police searched the beach and water, with the assistance of a rescue helicopter, Police Rescue and Ambulance.

Acting Inspector David Piddington from Newcastle City Police District is asking anyone who saw something to come forward.

“We would like to speak with any surfers who were in the water at Newcastle Beach at the time and may have seen a fellow surfer in trouble,” Acting Inspector Piddington said.

Anyone with information is urged to contact police immediately.
