MATILDA’S ALL BUT SECURE A TICKET TO THE TOKYO OLYMPICS
The Matilda’s have all but assured themselves of qualification for the Tokyo Olympic Games, after beating Vietnam 5-0 in the first leg of their final-round play-off in Newcastle last night.
Goals from Sam Kerr, Chloe Logarzo and home-town star Emily van Egmond virtually put the contest to bed in the first-half.
While, second-half strikes from Clare Polkinghorne and a late Kerr penalty blew out the scoreline.
More than 14,000 spectators witnessed the massive feat at McDonald Jones Stadium.
On Wednesday Australia will play the second leg in Cam Pha.
Having won all seven previous matches against Vietnam, that clash should only be a formality in terms of Olympic qualification for the Matilda’s who are chasing a fourth Games appearance.
Kate Haberfield will have more in sport tonight.
