SKENNARS HEAD RESIDENTS STILL WITHOUT WATER, AS TEMPORARY MAIN BREAKS

Water woes continue at Skennars Head on the far north coast.

1000 residents have been without water since 3pm on Monday after a main broke.

Council workers have been struggling to find and repair the break in dense bushland and – adding to the dilemma – a temporary water main which was installed yesterday has broken overnight.

More than 350,000 litres have been delivered via emergency tankers in the last two days, but not all residents have been able to access the supply.

Ballina Shire Council says it’s working to distribute bottled water as well, and it will continue to investigate the cause of the outage – with plans to deploy a drone this afternoon.

It says the water main stretches for more than 2.5 kilometres in thick vegetation.

Several schools have reopened in the area, but the St Anne’s Long Day Care Centre remains closed.

Council says residents needing to access showers are still welcome to use the hot and cold showers at the Ballina Indoor Sports Centre on Cherry Street.
