This year’s Surf Fest trophies celebrate Newcastle surfers, past and present.
Mark Richards and Philippa Anderson were the inspiration for the men’s and women’s awards shown on Monday, with designer Julie Squires including an ‘S’ and ‘W’ in the waves of one to represent ‘Surfest Women’.
“Both of them are designed trying to create a sort of silhouette that’s visually read from a distance as the athletes hold the trophy up.” – Julie Squires, 2019 Surfest Trophy Designer.
As for the sculpture of M-R; that’s been a labour of love for more than 20 years.
