Tributes are flowing for Australian tennis ace Peter Doohan, who’s lost his battle with motor neurone disease at the age of 56.
Doohan, from Newcastle, famously took down two-time Wimbledon champion Boris Becker in 1987.
“A moment which rocked the tennis world and changed forever the life of Newcastle battler, Peter Doohan.”
It earned him the title of “Becker Wrecker” – something not lost on the German great, who’s taken to Twitter saying “RIP mate, you were the better player”.
Doohan reached a career high ranking of 42 in singles and 15 in doubles and was unbeaten in Davis Cup representation.
“Two of the things all Australian tennis players think about is Wimbledon and Davis Cup. I’ve talked to the other blokes on the team and we’re all very excited about it. Wally, Fitzy and of course Cashy the Wimbledon champ – it’s great to him on our side!”
His funeral is expected be held in Newcastle.
