The State Government has earmarked almost $6.5-million for constructing a 24 kilometre rail trail between Murwillumbah and Crabbes Creek.
There is catch, the funding relies on several conditions being met.
“The federal government have been asked to contribute approximately half the cost of this rail trail as well – plus we won’t proceed with this project, unless the community consultation shows that there’s enormous support for this project.”
Legislation enabling the project to continue is likely to come before parliament by the year’s end.
The development comes as Lismore and Richmond Valley councils explore whether converting an additional section of track further south is feasible.

We have been there, done that over & over & over! Wherever I go, whoever I speak to – want our train service back as also, I have compiled so many statements to that effect and that our train service should never have been stopped!
We have traffic gridlock happening on the Gold Coast, even from Chinderah, the traffic is becoming a massive headache. Trains are coming to Coolangatta. I read a few months ago, when Geoff Provest said He would like the rail to come into NSW. David Oxenham, Director of Engineering Tweed Shire Council, supports the trains coming to Coolangatta but for us south – as always, he wants a bike track – no train service!
Adam Marshall knows from the recent study done in NSW: Report tabled – Access to transport for seniors and disadvantaged people in rural and regional NSW – people want and need train service. Also, Casino to Murwillumbah rail corridor runs through Lismore CITY – a CITY WITHOUT A TRAIN SERVICE!
The trains could transport people to Splendour in the Grass, the Falls Festival there at Christmas/New Yr, The Bluesfest at Tyagarah, the Festivals at Mullumbimby, The Lantern Festival at Lismore, Beef Week at Casino, the list could go on, and all the other happenings in the Northern Rivers.
The tourism market is crying out for decent transport – away from road, to give so many more people l opportunity to go to these! They are stuck at home, unable to go because of lack of safe, enjoyable transport!
