ADDITIONAL DRUMLINES ANNOUNCED FOLLOWING SUCCESSFUL TRIAL
50 additional smart drumlines will soon be deployed along the New South Wales Coast, after trials near Ballina proved successful.
37 sharks were caught using drumlines over six months – more than five times the number caught using mesh nets during the same period.
“This is the first time that this technology has been used in Australia, and we’re seeing fantastic results, that’s why we’re rolling it out to other parts of the state.”
“Everyone in New South Wales deserves access to this technology.”
Byron Bay, Forster and another, yet-to-be specified location on the Mid North Coast are among five beachside locations chosen.
Contractors will deploy the drumlines daily, weather permitting.
Captured sharks are tagged and released where possible.
