UTE ALLEGEDLY DRIVEN INTO TWEED RIVER WHILE EVADING POLICE

Two men have been hospitalised after allegedly driving their ute into a river while evading police in the far north of New South Wales.

The utility came to the attention of police when they were patrolling Coral Street in Tweed Heads around 10pm last night, due to the way it was being driven.

Police attempted to stop the vehicle, but as they approached, say it drove off.

A search was initiated, and local residents directed emergency services to a submerged vehicle in the Tweed River.

The driver, a 21-year-old man, sustained minor cuts to his right knee and possible fractures.

The male passenger, aged 22, sustained a possible broken hand.

Police will speak to the pair when they are released from hospital.
