SPEEDING DRIVERS FRUSTRATE POLICE

Police say they’re dismayed at the number of drivers caught speeding over the Easter long weekend.

7,687 drivers in New South Wales were fined during Operation Tortoise, which began at 12.01am Thursday and concluded at 11:59pm last night.

In the Northern Region, which stretches from the Central Coast to the NSW boarder, 1,572 speeding tickets were issued, 237 more than last year.

There were 18 major crashes – two of those were fatal.

Highway Patrol Assistant Commissioner, Michael Corboy says speeding drivers continue to put their lives and the lives of others at risk.

“Speeding is still the biggest contributor to fatal crashes, contributing to about 40%.

“The fact that over 7500 drivers were still detected speeding over a single long-weekend is ludicrous,” Assistant Commissioner Corboy said.

In the Northern Region, drink driving offences were down, with 79 offences recorded, 46 less than the same period in 2016.
