The blaze at Boggabri, west of Tamworth broke out just after 2pm.
An emergency warning was issued at 3.30 for residents along Binalong Road, after flames jumped the Kamilaroi Highway and Namoi River.
Police were forced to close the road between Boggabri and Narrabri, the blaze has scorched around 15-hundred hectares.
