12PM NEWS UPDATE: NOVEMBER 22, 2016

Here’s Paul Lobb with an NBN News update.

  • A magnitude 7.4 earthquake has struck off Japan’s north-east coast, triggering a tsunami warning. The quake hit 63-kilometres south-east of Iwaki in the Fukushima Prefecture, and was felt as far south as Tokyo. The quake struck shortly after 6AM local time, and has been followed by a series of powerful aftershocks. A 1-metre wave has hit the coastline near the Fukushima nuclear plant, but it does not appear to have caused any damage or injuries. Meantime a 6.3 magnitude quake has struck off New Zealand this morning.
  • Lake Macquarie police have released an image of a ute involved in a ram raid at Warners Bay. A hairdressing salon on Hillsborough Road was extensively damaged early yesterday morning, when a utility was driven through the front doors. Two men stole hair products.
  • U.S President-elect Donald Trump has announced he will dump the international trade deal involving Australia on his first day in the White House.  He says the Trans Pacific partnership has the potential to be disastrous for the USA.
  • People in Melbourne’s west have begun the clean up after wild storms lashed the city overnight.
  • Meantime in Western New South Wales, temperatures are climbing towards the mid thirties, prompting warnings not to leave pets or children in parked cars.
  • And the pilot of a passenger plane in Europe has been forced to abort a landing at the last possible second. Fierce winds rocked the Swiss A320 aircraft sideways as it was trying to touch down at Amsterdam airport.
