There’s good news for the Hunter’s commercial fisherman, with the state government lifting a 12 month ban on the activity.
The Department of Primary Industries says the announcement follows advice from Williamtown Contamination Expert Panel.
Fullerton Cove and Tilligerry Creek will be reopened for Recreational Fishing on Saturday October 1, but will not include dusky flathead caught in the Hunter River.
Deputy Director General DPI Fisheries, Geoff Allan, says tests have been carried out on prawns, fish and oysters and they confirmed the continued presence of PFAS in some seafood, but at levels that provide minimal risk to most consumers.
“The public can be confident that seafood for sale is safe to eat,” he said.
“Commercial and recreational fishers, as well as residents have been patient during these closures enabling us to undertake the necessary investigations to ensure their safety and well-being for the future.
