MAN TO FACE COURT AFTER ALLEGED POLICE PURSUIT

A 26-year-old man will face a Taree court, following a police pursuit on the North Coast overnight.

Police were called to the incident on the Pacific Highway, north of Taree, just before midnight and allegedly saw the the driver of a Holden swerving in front of trucks and braking unnecessarily.

Officers in a fully-marked police car followed the Holden along the highway under lights and sirens in an attempt to stop it.

The driver of the vehicle allegedly braked suddenly and swerved into the breakdown lane, with the police car stopping in front of it.

As the officers were attempting to leave their vehicle, it’s alleged the accused accelerated and rammed the rear of the police car.

The Holden then drove back onto the highway and accelerated away at high speed. A pursuit ensued at speeds of up to 200kmh before being terminated for safety reasons.

A short time later the abandoned Holden was spotted and the accused allegedly hiding in long grass.

He was arrested and charged with a range of offences including drive manner dangerous, mid-range drink driving and malicious damage.
