SHINY SHOES TO RAISE AWARENESS OF DEMENTIA

Carers, workers and dementia patients put their best feet forward today, in a bid to debunk stigma surrounding the disease.

Around 150 shiny shoes – made by members of the community – went on display at Wallsend, as part of a campaign to raise awareness.

“More often than not people with dementia are put into care earlier than they could have been than if people were aware of things they could have done to, you know, look after their loved ones with dementia,” said DBMAS Support Worker Kuda Sozinyu.

It’s hoped the display – called Walk A Day In My Shoes – will get more people talking about dementia, which now affects more than 350,000 Australians.
