KIDS PUT THEIR SMARTS TO THE TEST IN STATE QUIZ
New South Wales students are steering clear of calculators, to put their smarts to the test.
Over 700 year five and six students across the New England region, will join 19,000 others statewide to take part in the Newcastle Permanent Primary School Mathematics Competition.
The students will complete the 35-question paper tomorrow, without the use of calculators, rulers or other mathematical instruments.
“Children need to do mental calculations. They need to do those computational skills. They need to know their timetables, they need to be able to have different strategies so with setting up different strategies for children to meet different criteria across the mathematical strands.”
