Sawtell’s Luke Field opened the day strong for the North East Breakers in the state’s only 16’s team event, winning his singles and doubles event in three sets against Sydney’s Metro Slammers in Forster.
Each region put forward its strongest two girls and two boys to compete in the unique tournament, which allows the coach to guide them during play.
“The coach can go on court, just give them a little bit of advice and guidance and sometimes a little bit of counselling, which really does help,” North East Breakers’ manager Jaime Mcdonagh says.
It’s the first time in 10 years the 16’s team event has been held in the state.
