Tamworth held its inaugural NAIDOC Awards ceremony last night, with Douglas Yirk winning Volunteer of the Year, for his efforts with the Local Aboriginal Land Council.
He also provides transport for kids who attend the Midnight Basketball program, which took out the Community Contribution category.
It aims to keep young people off the streets on a Saturday night, and helps those in attendance to build positive relationships.
Young Oztag stars Paris Knox and Zarayn Knight won the Sportsperson of the Year categories, after representing the Australian Indigenous side’s at last years World Cup.
