TANGLED WHALE OFF NEWCASTLE COAST

Whale watchers in Newcastle got more than they bargained for today, with the appearance of a young, distressed whale off the coast.

The humpback whale appeared to have become tangled, with something trailing from its tail flukes

Research and rescue organisation ORRCA has notified the National Parks and Wildlife Service, who will attempt to disentangle the mammal tomorrow- a task that’s too difficult to do in falling light.

The humpback whale was last seen at Strezelecki Lookout and is slowly travelling north.

Locals are urged to keep an eye out for the young whale in the morning and to notify ORCCA of any sightings.
