MERCHANT MARINERS HONOURED
Thousands of merchant mariners were honoured this morning, at a commemorative service held at the Newcastle Foreshore. Hundreds gathered to remember those who served in the merchant navy and lost their lives during times of war.
This year’s memorial service was held on a significant day in the Hunter’s history.
It’s 74 years and one day since the S.S. Iron Chieftain left Newcastle Harbour, only to be torpedoed by a Japanese submarine 12 hours later.
12 crew members were killed in the 1942 attack.
