TRUCK ROLLS AND CATCHES FIRE AT FREEMANS WATERHOLE
There are substantial traffic delays southbound on the M1 near Newcastle after a truck rolled and caught alight about 2am.
Emergency crews arrived at the Pacific Highway in Freemans Waterhole about 2.20am after a semi-trailer carrying Oregon pine slabs failed to negotiate a left hand bend and overturned.
The truck burst into flames and the 59-year-old driver escaped with only minor chest injuries.
Paramedics took the man to John Hunter Hospital.
A NSW Rural Fire Service spokesman said motorists could expect lengthy delays while the scene was cleared.
“Crews worked really hard to extinguish the fire, the truck was carrying timber,” spokesman Jason Millar told reporters.
“Crews continued throughout the morning to extinguish the load and contain the diesel spill.”
Mr Millar said the scene would take a while to clear while crews ensured the area was safe.
“Delays will be on for quite some time. Obviously safety takes first preference and we have to make sure the area is safe for our crews to work in.”
Motorists are advised to avoid the area.
