‘SENSIBLE’ CHANGES NEEDED TO NEWCASTLE LIGHT RAIL ROUTE: ENGINEERS AUSTRALIA

An Australian engineering lobby group is calling for Newcastle’s proposed light rail route to be altered.

Engineers Australia says it should run along the existing rail corridor until at least Crown Street, before moving onto Scott Street.

The current design has the tracks diverting along Hunter Street near Worth Place and terminating at Pacific Park.

“Engineers Australia is concerned about flaws in the current scheme and recommends that relatively straightforward changes to the proposal could greatly improve its effectiveness,” said  Michael van Koeverden, Newcastle Division spokesperson at Engineers Australia.

The group also recommends double tracks run across Stewart Avenue and planning for future extensions of the network should be considered now.

“The final design should show how the project improves the transport system and, ultimately, the city overall, including better travel times, less congestion and improved service levels,” Mr van Koeverden said.
