MORE DETAILS RELEASED ON NEWCASTLE’S LIGHT RAIL

Newcastle’s new light rail service will be up and running by 2019, according to NSW Transport Minister Andrew Constance.

During a visit to the city this morning, Minister Constance revealed new details of the service, including a timeline of its construction.

Enabling work is expected to get underway later this year, with major construction to begin in 2017.

The service will have six stops – Wickham, Honeysuckle, Civic, Crown Street, Market Street and Pacific Park.

A fleet of four operational vehicles will run every 10 minutes on weekdays and every 15 minutes on weekends.

The government has also announced tenders for the city’s own local public transport operator,Transport for Newcastle.

“The current transport system is not working. As the city grows and light rail gets underway, this is an opportunity to rethink how we deliver transport and create something that will benefit Newcastle and set it up for the future,” Mr Constance said.

A review of the $500-million light rail project’s environmental factors is also expected to be released in the next few days.
