NUMBER OF NORTH WEST COUNCILS LABELLED ‘UNFIT’
A number of New England North West councils have been labelled ‘unfit’ in a report released by the state’s Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal.
Six councils across the region including Armidale, Uralla, Liverpool Plains, Walcha, Guyra and Gwydir were not able to meet a number of criteria assessed as part of local government reforms.
87 councils state-wide were deemed ‘unfit’ and will now have to consider a number of options, including possible mergers with their neighbours.
“This is it. You know, we’re saying to councils across the state it is time that you responded and acted in your community’s interest.”
Earlier this year all 152 councils were asked to submit proposals demonstrating their financial stability for the future.
