COMMEMORATING 100 YEARS SINCE THE OPENING OF BHP

A century ago today, the BHP steelworks was officially opened in Newcastle.

To commemorate the anniversary, a ceremony has taken place at the former site, with a memorial unveiled to honour its place in the region’s history.

At its peak, BHP employed 11,200 people in 1981, but it’s estimated more than 50,000 were employed there in its eight decades of operation.

It closed its doors in 1999.
