A Muslim man was physically and verbally assaulted outside the Wallsend mosque last night.
The 47-year-old was standing near the main gates with two children after evening prayer at around 9:45pm, when a grey Landcruiser pulled up.
A male passenger got out of the car and punched him in the chest and grabbed his hair.
Neighbours say he also hurled verbal abuse at the victim, yelling “This is my country!”
Police say they’re treating the incident very seriously.
“We’ll be talking to the Imam and visiting the mosque to let them know we’ll be conducting a thorough investigation and bring the person to justice,” said Inspector Michael Gorman.
