HUNTER SUCCESS AT THE MELBOURNE CUP

Protectionist may have delivered the first Melbourne Cup win for Germany, but two Hunter residents have also shared in his success.

Newcastle’s Jamie Lovett and Luke Murrell from Aberglasslyn are part-owners of the horse through Australian Bloodstock.

Lovett is a former Lakes United player and real estate agent.

Protectionist is trained by Andreas Wohler and was ridden by English jockey Ryan Moore, who won the Cox Plate on Irish
galloper Adelaide.

The five-year-old stallion outclassed Red Cadeaux and Who Shot Thebarman for the $6.2-million win.
