ELECTRIC MOTORCYCLE CREATING BUZZ

There’s an almighty battle taking place on Australian racetracks right now…and it’s strangely quiet.

The unfamiliar sound of silence…the brave new world of the electric motorcycle.

Jon Eggenhuizen is the creator of Catavolt, a bike with fast looks and race times to match.

We first met met him 18 months ago when his original bike set a world landspeed record in an electric category… 177 kilometres an hour.

“I’ve been developing mainly motorbikes for the past four years now and this is my result. I aim to take this into production level now. It’s pretty eye-catching.”

Jon says there’s plenty of interest in the potential for a road bike…among its benefits, constant torque and of course, environmental pluses.

“It’s quite unique because the motor’s actually in the rear wheel. So that enabled us to have the engine bay where the engine normally is to be filled with batteries.”

The design has allowed Catavolt to maintain the look of a regular bike.

“It’s surprising how bad boy motorcycle riders are, they still want it to look good.”
