NSW HEALTH MINISTER RESIGNS

NSW Health Minister Jillian Skinner has announced her resignation and intention to retire from politics.

Ms Skinner, 72, drew criticism last year over her handling of issues including a chemotherapy under-dosing scandal, a deadly baby gassing tragedy and cremation mix-ups.

Her resignation comes a week after Mike Baird announced he would step down as NSW Premier effective immediately.

There had been speculation Ms Skinner was to lose the health portfolio in a coming Cabinet reshuffle.

“I am naturally sad to be leaving the portfolio I love,” Ms Skinner said today.

“However, a new chapter beckons and I am looking forward to the challenges of life outside politics.”

Ms Skinner’s decision to quit will also trigger a by-election in her electoral district of North Shore.

There will also be a by-election in coming months in Mr Baird’s seat of Manly.

Ms Skinner was first elected to the NSW Legislative Assembly in 1994 and served as a minister under premiers Barry O’Farrell and Mr Baird.

Newly appointed NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian commended Ms Skinner’s contribution to the health industry.

“I am deeply disappointed my friend, mentor and colleague Jillian Skinner has announced her resignation from the NSW Parliament,” Ms Berejiklian said.

“During her time as minister she has delivered major improvements in health services and overseen the largest expansion in health infrastructure in the state’s history.

“I wish Jillian and her family well for the future and know that she will be sorely missed by so many across the entire health system.”
