New cancer treatment technology at Gosford Hospital set to speed up radiation process

A major technology upgrade at Gosford Hospital is set to see shorter, more targeted treatment for cancer patients.
Doctors say two new ‘linear accelerator’ machines at the Central Coast Cancer Centre will improve imaging capabilities and speed up the radiation process.
Dr Chris Lee told NBN News “when a patient is laying on the bed preparing to be treated, we take a 3D image of the tumour and the surrounding anatomy.
“We can do that 60 per cent faster now, using 25 per cent less dose.”
Dr Louise Nardoni said “the images are taken quicker and the delivery is faster so they’re not on the bed for as long.”
It’s hoped the new technology will reduce the side effects of cancer treatment for more local patients.
The two machines were funded through a $6-million federal government grant.
