Byron Mayor Michael Lyon’s gag order scrapped
Byron Shire Mayor Michael Lyon has attempted to suppress the details of his criminal court matter from being released to the public.
Mr Lyon is facing two domestic violence related charges – after he allegedly assaulted his wife.
Police say Lyon then fled the scene of the assault – the alleged victim did not have any injuries.
The 50 year old fronting Tweed Heads local court – after police charged him earlier this month with one count each of common assault domestic violence, and stalk intimidate intend fear physical harm domestic violence.
Lyon has entered a NOT guilty plea.
His team also made an application for a suppression order – to withhold Lyon’s name and the details of the charges from being released – claiming their publication would negatively impact the defendant and his family.
Lawyers for Channel Nine AND other media fought this – arguing that the matter IS in the public interest – the magistrate agreeing.

The mayor has been on the campaign trail in a bid to win back his position.
It’s understood the alleged victim has signed a statement to have the charges dropped- however they are still before the courts.
Lyon’s matter has been set down for hearing in March next year – the mayor himself intends to take the stand.
