Man rescued from roof of car after being trapped by raging flood waters in Tamworth
A young man has been saved from rushing flood waters by the State Emergency Service in NSW’s northeast.
The man in his 20s became stuck on the roof of his car at Wallamore, near Tamworth about 5am today, after his car was trapped by rising flood waters.
State Emergency Services (SES) Superintendent Paul Perusic said SES volunteers moved quickly to rescue the man.
“When our members arrived on scene, the man had climbed out of his vehicle and was on the roof of his car,” Perusic said.
“Members retrieved him with a boat and brought him out of the waters, where he was assessed by ambulance personnel, but was uninjured.”
The rescue came as 53 millimetres of rain fell along the Peel River in 24 hours, sparking a minor flood warning from the Bureau of Meteorology.
“Minor flooding is expected to continue through Tuesday morning which may lead to road closures,” Perusic also said.
“We’re asking the community to make safe and sensible decisions and to not drive through floodwaters.”
The Peel River at Tamworth Road Bridge was 3.34 metres and rising (as of 9 am), with minor flooding.
It could hit a peak of 3.70 metres, the BoM said.
