Rewind Series 4 Episode 3 – The Civil Defence

It was 1967, and NBN cameras were on the scene.. an extensive operation was underway, to train
and educate Civil Defence Volunteers.

The rganisation which later became the SES was established the 1930’s.. to provide assistance and
support in times of need.

Volunteers came from the local community, and they played a crucial role in civil defence services,
to respond to floods, storms, fires, and other disasters.

NBN covered the training of volunteers on location too.

Capturing members of the Women’s Civil Defence unit laying field cables in local bushland.

And here, as the search and rescue division, headed off to a first aid training operation in the
Hunter Valley

Of course hard working Civil Defence personnel required sustenance, ‘Garbage tin’ ovens were thrown up quickly at emergency sites.

This demonstration at Jesmond, to provide a steady supply of scones, for the hard working
volunteers…
