Man attacked by shark on New South Wales north coast
A man has survived being attacked by a great white shark on New South Wales’ Mid North Coast.
The 23-year-old suffered serious injuries to his right leg during the attack at North Shore Beach at Port Macquarie about 11am.
He was flown to John Hunter Hospital for treatment.
A three-metre-long great white shark was confirmed to have bitten the surfer, the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development said this afternoon.
Over the past week, 15 white sharks have been detected in Port Macquarie on the tagged shark listening system, DPIRD also said.
“Following the incident, the government’s shark team have set an additional two SMART drumlines in addition to the four that were set, as normal, this morning,” a spokesperson for the department said.
The surfboard, collected by NSW Police, appears to have a chunk taken out of the tail end.
The beach has been closed following the incident.
