Rewind Series 3 Episode 22 – Ambulance Services and Hamilton Station
Our early film footage shows the Hamilton Ambulance station in the 1960’s.
Built in 1923, it was an iconic building for a growing community.
In 1963, the Hunter District Ambulance Service was formed, The Hamilton Station became the headquarters.
The fleet at the time included Valiants, International single spinners, plus Ford Mainline and Ford Customline Wagons.
The Waterfront Mobile First Aid Service was crucial for safety at Newcastle’s busy port.
Manned 24 hours a day and dispatched when needed by Ambulance control at Hamilton.
In 1971 new stations opened, Belmont in February and Beresfield in October.
And our crews filed stories on regional services including Dungog, Stroud, and Brisbane waters.
Ambulance services play an integral role in our healthcare system.
And we pay tribute to all the hard working professionals, at the Newcastle District Ambulance Station and those across our entire broadcast region.
