EMERGENCY WARNING: Cessnock Road Fire, Abermain (Cessnock LGA)

An emergency warning is in place for Abermain, South Weston and Pelaw Main areas due to three fast moving bush fires.

If you are in the area of Pelaw Main, South Weston and Kurri Kurri Hospital, you are at risk. Seek shelter now or as the fire approaches to protect yourself from the fire. It is too late to leave.

If you are in the area of Cessnock Road, Charles Street, York Street, Ridley Street, William Street and Hebburn Road, in Abermain, you are at risk. Leave now in a northerly direction if the path is clear to Kurri Kurri.

If you are in the area of Richie RoadBromage Road or Averys Laneprepare now.

Current Situation

  • Three bush fires which started in the areas of Cessnock Road, Charles Street and Hebburn Road in Abermain have joined and are now burning south of the Kurri Kurri Hospital, towards Pelaw Main.
  • The fires are burning in an easterly direction under strong north westerly winds.
  • Embers will be blown long distances ahead of the main fire front starting spot fires, these may impact your home earlier than the main fire front.
  • Firefighters and waterbombing aircraft are working in the area.

What you need to do – Pelaw Main, South Weston and Kurri Kurri Hospital

  • If you are in the area of Pelaw Main, South Weston and Kurri Kurri Hospital, your life is at risk. It is too late to leave.
  • Seek shelter now or as the fire approaches in a solid structure such as a house. Do not be caught in the open in the path of the fire.
  • Go inside and protect yourself from the fire front. Actively monitor the situation.
  • A safer location may include a well cleared area nearby. Neighbourhood safer places offer a place of last resort if there are no other options.
  • If you planned to visit the area, or live in the area but are away from home, do not return.

  • If you planned to visit the area, or live in the area but are away from home, do not return.

What you need to do – Richie Road, Bromage Road and Averys Lane

  • Fire may impact on your property. Make your final preparations now. Check and follow your Bush Fire Survival Plan. If you do not have a plan, decide what you will do if the situation changes. Leaving early is your safest option.
  • Fill buckets, sinks and bath tubs with water ready to put out spot fires
  • Block downpipes and fill your gutters with water to help stop burning embers. Do not get on the roof.
  • Remove items which can burn from around your home, such as furniture and door mats.
  • If you have firefighting equipment, get it ready now.
  • Put on protective clothing made of natural fibres that covers all of your skin. Wear sturdy shoes. Have plenty of drinking water available.
  • If you are not prepared, your safest option is to leave early.
