Police operation on the Mid North Coast

Two men have been arrested on the NSW Mid North Coast after shots were fired from a Mercedes ute along a major highway and a body was found on the side of a road.

The two men were arrested at Big W in Kempsey, with heavily armed police taking the pair into custody after an hours-long manhunt.

Police have confirmed they are not looking for anyone else in relation to the incident.  (Nine)

The series of events began in the early hours of this morning when several shots were fired from a black Mercedes dual cab ute on the M1 at Coopernook, Kundabung, Fernbank Creek Road in Port Macquarie and the Telegraph Point area.

One of the bullets grazed a man who was driving in Coopernook.

He was assessed by paramedics and had suffered minor injuries.

A bullet also hit a police car that was attempting to stop the Mercedes on the M1 around the Fernbank Creek Road area.

Officers earlier said they were searching for multiple people, and have since clarified that they are looking for two men, including the driver of the vehicle.

Multiple police resources are responding to the active situation.

Acting Assistant Commissioner Scott Tanner also confirmed that police were not enforcing a lockdown and urged anyone with information to come forward.

Tanner also said a man’s body was found on the side of the road at Fernbank Creek Road in Port Macquarie this morning.

“At this stage we don’t know if it is linked with this incident,” he said.

Tanner said earlier that the ute was found abandoned at Wayne Richards Park in Port Macquarie.

The men are expected to be taken to Kempsey Police Station, where they are likely to be charged after police inquiries.
