Threat reduced for NSW town as out of control bushfires continue to burn

Weather conditions have helped reduce the threat level for a number of blazes across NSW.

After emergency warnings were in place overnight for out-of-control bushfires near the town of Tenterfield, in the state’s Northern Tablelands, the threat levels have been revised.

A large blaze is still burning in the Jennings region near the Queensland border, which crossed from Queensland into NSW and impacted on homes and properties in the area of Wallangarra in Queensland and Jennings in NSW.

Now residents in the area are being told to monitor conditions after the fire ripped through more than 3000 hectares.

Another large bushfire is also burning in the region, four kilometres southeast of Tenterfield.

A south-easterly wind change impacted the fire ground earlier in the night, prompting emergency warnings and evacuations.

Residents of Tenterfield were seeking refuge at the local showground.

Among them was Leo Perkins, who only moved to town on Tuesday.

“So this is my introduction to the Tenterfield life, here at the evacuation centre,” he told 9News.

The fire is still considered out of control and has burnt through over 1100 hectares, however the easing conditions reduced the threat level overnight to watch and act.

As those conditions let up, a number of blazes across the state – including others near the Queensland border – were also reduced to watch and act warnings.

Among them was a blaze in the Clarence Valley region, which was moved to a watch and act level hours after an earlier emergency warning on Tuesday night.

A wind change had sent the fire burning at Glens Creek Road, Nymboidam – about 25 kilometres south-west of Grafton – in a northerly direction.

The blaze had already burnt through more than 8000 hectares and residents were being advised to monitor conditions.

An evacuation centre was set up at the Grafton Racecourse.

Tuesday’s blaze brought back painful memories for some residents, who are all too familiar with the threat after Black Summer.

“We went through it in 2019 and we are completely distraught … we lost my mum’s house and we lost everything we owned,” Nymboida resident Elizabeth Moore told 9News.

“Our plan is to stay because it isn’t the type of fire that we had last time.”
