WATER CONTAMINATION CONCERNS AT EVANS HEAD AERODROME

The Evans Head Memorial Aerodrome Committee is calling for a Stop Work at the remediation site, due to concerns that there’s contaminated sediment running into local waterways.

Members are worried about the potential effects the run-off may have on our health as well as local biology.

  1. A media release from Richmond Valley Council’s General Manager dated today claims that:
“Work has started with the removal of contaminated soil in the industrial land and these stock piles have been bunded and protected to avoid erosion”

This is complete nonsense. There is no bunding and the stockpiles are not protected. Leachate from the site is escaping into local waterways.

Richmond Valley Council has a credibility problem.

The EPA needs to investigate the contamination problem and the tender process for the cleanup also needs proper review. In the interim a STOP WORK needs to be put in place.
