For more than two decades it’s sat idle, but today a derelict garage at the old Lambton Police Station was removed, after testing positive for asbestos.
Concerns were raised by independent candidate Kath Elliot in the lead up to council’s ward three by-election.
The state’s police minister then ordered an inspection.
“It’s being removed under world class best practice standards. There are occupational hygenists on site and there’s an independent person here monitoring the entire process,” said Liberal candidate for Newcastle Karen Howard.
