MAN TRIES TO SWIM FROM POLICE, CHARGED OVER DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

A man who tried to swim away from police near Woollongong yesterday has been charged with domestic violence offences.

The 35-year-old man allegedly stabbed a woman in the leg at a Lake Heights home last month.

The injured woman contacted police, however officers were unable to find the man when they arrived at the house.

Just after 6 o’clock yesterday evening, police noticed the man driving a Holden Rodeo ute at Towradgi.

The man stopped, and ran from his vehicle towards the coast.

He was later tracked down by a police dog and spottted swimming 50 metres offshore at Fairy Meadow beach.

Police monitored the man in the surf for about an hour, before Marine Area Command officers picked him up and took him to shore.

He was arrested and taken to Wollongong Police Station, charged with a number of domestic violence offences, and driving disqualified.

The man is due to face Wollongong Local Court today.
