TICK AND SNAKE BITES ON THE RISE ACROSS HUNTER

Hunter pet owners are urged to be on alert for ticks and snakes as recent rain and warm weather provides the perfect environment for the creepy crawlies.
This long weekend, the Newcastle Animal Referral & Emergency Centre at Broadmeadow experienced a significant increase in patients, especially those bitten by a tick or snake.
Many received life-saving treatments for their illness and are expected to make full recoveries.
The centre has recorded a 15 percent increase in the number of patients presenting with tick poisoning or snake bites in September compared to last year.
Pet owners should be vigilant about the areas their animals roam and remember that backyards are not always safe, particularly those adjoining bushland in coastal and lakeside suburbs.
Symptoms of tick and snake bites can vary, however behaviours in your pet to be particularly concerned about include lethargy, unsteadiness, and respiratory distress in both cats and dogs.
Treatment is most effective when given early, so seek veterinary attention immediately if you have any concerns.
Searching your pet for ticks daily is recommended.
